Upgrades to an item are a way to boost the stats of an item. Depending on the type of Upgrade item, it can increase an item's Rarity or Mark Level, and also boost other stats.

Upgrading equipment in The War Within requires a set number of Flightstones and Crests, and each item comes with an upgrade track. Each upgrade increases the cost of the following one by a set amount.

Item Level

The value of an item's basic stats increases when it is upgraded. This is the sum of all of its upgraded benefits (attack magic attack, attack defense). Upgrades to items can be costly depending on the upgrader you choose and the type of upgrade you choose to do. This is due to the sheer number of perks that must be changed in order to upgrade an item.

It can also be used as a gating requirement when waiting for dungeons, raids and scenarios. It is also used to limit the amount of PvP gear players can use, since PvP is limited at lower levels. Players can view their average item level in their character sheet.

Using the item level can help players evaluate the strength of equipment when they decide to buy or sell. It's a good indicator of the quality of an item and the amount of damage it is capable of dealing with. Comparing items in the inventory of a vendor can be done by using the level of the item.

The item level can be checked by pressing the ALT key on PC or using the left stick (L3) on XB1 and PS4. This will show the full description of the item, as well as its ilvl. It can also be found by hovering over an item with the mouse cursor, and then entering /itemlevel into chat.

There are a variety of theories on how the item level is calculated. One theory is that the item level is a numerical value derived from a formula that calculates the amount an item's stats are worth. It takes into consideration the fact that various perks have different value, and also that gems in sockets increase the item's overall value. This can result in an Best item upgrade's ilvl which is calculated and is usually very close to Blizzard's real item level.

However, this isn't the only factor which can affect an item's ilvl as the size of the area the item dropped in can change the value of its stats, for instance by adding an additional level to its haste rating or crit rating. This means that items that drop at higher levels will have higher ilvl than those from lower-level instances.

Item stats can be the difference between a good or bad item for players. The game uses them in many ways to encourage players to not limit themselves to one weapon, and to encourage players to explore other weapons. The stat modifications of a weapon boost the base stats. Players can choose to upgrade an item with specific stats, or reroll the affixes. The range of stats determined by the item's level. However, all items will have at least one stat within the same range, unless it's a unique item or the item is a God Roll from a boss in a raid.

Another thing that could be changed is the possibility of upgrading equipment without having to reroll affixes, or choose which stats to boost. However, as with the base equipment, this would have to be performed on a per-Best item upgrader level, and the item compare interface wouldn't show all possible stats that were gained or lost at the same time.

Item Luck

The Luck stat of a player increases the probability of obtaining items, the properties that are generated by loot, and the strength of these properties. It doesn't, however directly impact damage or the ability to upgrade items. It gives players the chance to upgrade their gear earlier in the game. This is especially beneficial in the early game, because players tend to put weapon scaling and defenses above raw damage gains.

Luck can also boost the chances of upgrading items at the Blacksmith. This should not be confused with the Blacksmith's overall chance of upgrading that increases with each level of the item and can be further increased by using an anti-material, such as a Scroll of Strength or a Jewel of Blessing.

Armor, shields and weapons have an initial Luck value of 40. These items can be upgraded with golden ingots, spined leather or oak boards (depending on the item's material type) to give +40 Luck or to boost the existing Luck of an item, up to 140.

Moreover some items, like the Hollow weapon, which is infused with Hollow can be outfitted to increase the damage dealt by any damage-dealing skill by 5%. These items are available in the shop or crafted by using the appropriate ingredients.

Best item upgrade Failure

Not all upgrades are successful. Cash shop items can be used to boost the chances of success for an upgrade or to stop players from losing their item in the event that it does not work.

The rate of success of an upgrade is displayed in the Honing UI. The percentage represents the probability of completing the upgrade successfully, and can be increased by adding Additional Materials or Special Materials. The probability of success can only be increased so much, and the likelihood that an upgrade will fail cannot exceed 100%.

The luck of an item may influence the success of an upgrade. All items have an average success rate of 25 percent and every item with Luck increases this chance by 5%.

It is important to note that upgrade items are rendered above the inventory items, so enchantment glint and other effects could be masked by them. If you wish to disable the upgrade overlays, the config option decoration.renderUpgradeOverlays can be set to False in the Item Upgrader CORE client config.
