Aureus
Aureus is an opalescent gemstone primarily found in the northern and eastern foothills and cliffs of the Faelands. Minor deposits of Aureus have also been found in the northern fjords of Kalythos Isle. It is sought after by many civilizations on Atheryin for its ability to split, filter, and alter the nature of magic, as well as for applications in staff-making and jewelry. Aureus’ rarity and unique abilities makes it one of the most expensive gemstones in the world.
Uses
Lyrian Constructs
During the height of the Lyrian Empire, Aureus was commonly used as a component in a number of magic-powered machines. By altering the way the gemstone is cut and shaped, Lyrian machinists were able to utilize Aureus to “purify” magic into a more innate form of energy, distribute concentrated magic across multiple channels, or create powered dynamos, among other uses. Access to Aureus deposits was a primary motivator for the Lyrian invasions of Nachkun and Daín, where large deposits of the gemstone continue to be mined to this day.
Staves
Magical staves are sometimes created with Aureus, in various configurations depending upon the type of magic the wielder intends to channel. Aureus staves are typically reserved only for manipulating particularly powerful forms of magic, while less expensive Deonite or Arkite staves are more commonplace.
Mining & Distribution
The largest deposits of Aureus are found in the rugged, rocky northernmost foothills of the Faelands. Nachkun is the largest producer of Aureus in the world, as its large central basaltic cliffs have left massive deposits of the material exposed. The cliffs are also considerably easier to mine compared to deposits in the Ohkorra Desert, which are difficult to access due to the colossal spire-like rock formations the Aureus is usually found near the top of. Okomos is the top producer in the Ohkorra Desert region, with many nomadic tribes specializing in harvesting Aureus for hundreds of years.
